In debriefs, founders rarely complained about “not enough applicants.” They complained about hours spent politely ending conversations that a clearer early screen would have ended earlier.
Across the panel, teams with thin intake (résumé plus a vague scorecard) reported more first-round calls and lower confidence that those calls were worth the slot. Teams with shared artifacts before booking - scorecards, work samples, or structured phone notes - reported fewer intros and higher shortlist agreement.
The lesson is not “never talk to candidates.” It is that calendar is the scarce resource. Any hiring stack that cannot produce comparable evidence before the invite is quietly taxing runway.
When we scored founder hours saved, Ashby and Honrly both sat near the top for different reasons: pipeline discipline versus assessment artifacts. The gap versus weaker stacks was process, not branding.
